Riding Fast to High Heavens

I thought nothing could surprise me anymore. But this one did.

I came across this news today of a man who has an odd last wish: to race to heaven by riding on his motorbike–at his very own wake. A similar story happened in 2008 too when 24-year-old Angel Pantoja Medina was embalmed standing upright for a three-day wake.

Here’s my rough translation of the El Nuevo Dia news:

A man decided he could go to heaven much faster if he rode on his motorbike for the last trip.

At least, that’s what you will think when you enter the Marin Funeral Home in Hato Rey, where family and friends attend the wake of David Morales Colon, 22. His last request was to be mounted on top of his red and orange motorcycle with the engine turned on. For the wake, he wore dark clothes, a cap, and sunglasses while sitting on the vehicle. He was positioned driving the motorbike, like he did all the time while working as a messenger.

Morales Colon was shot dead last Thursday in Barrio Obrero.
